It had been a typical Saturday morning for Doonie so far. Wake up at 9, quietly get dressed and ready, then sneak out of the dorm building. You see, he guessed about half the guys stayed up all night playing Black Ops, Halo, or some other sort of corrupting game and they really liked to sleep in. You don't want to be the one caught waking up your whole hall. It always had to be quiet at least until 2pm or there would be some serious commotion. Doonie went and ate a large breakfast, consisting of eggs, an english muffin, bacon, sausage, and pancakes. Oh, and a glass of orange juice. He liked orange juice. It made the whole meal come together, I mean, if he had just water, it wouldn't be as great. As he was finishing up his plate, he wondered what he wanted to do today. Shoot some hoops? See a movie? Relax? Study? There were plenty of options that would make him content.
As Doonie scraped up the last few crumbs and drops of syrup on his plate, he decided today was going to be a kite-flying day. It was sunny and beautiful, the beach would be a great place to go. There's usually always some sort of gust going on, so no worries there. But what it would mean is he'd have to go back to his room and dig through a couple boxes next to his bed. Doonie wasn't gonna risk it. He chose just to shell out the money to buy a new one from the student store. Why did they sell kites? He didn't know, but he supposed they wouldn't carry them if no one bought them. "Thanks," he told the female cashier as he took the kite away. He sighed as he placed his wallet back in his pocket, and started walking out of the school building. Of course, he looked both ways before he crossed the street, and took a pit stop at the trashcan on the other side. He ripped off the packaging, with thankfully came off pretty easily, no scissors involved, and inspected it. Wasn't bad. It was school colors of course, buff and blue, (well, sky blue), but was one of those triangle shaped with two ribbons floating off two of the corners. The logo on it was pretty big, but once it got up there you wouldn't have known what it said, it would just look like a pretty, blue and yellow kite.
Doonie took off his slippers and walked barefoot on the sand. It was a nice feeling, the squish between his toes. A little rough sometimes, yes, but it's not like anything else he's experienced. It's unique. He unwound some of the string off the handle, and began to run, trying to get it up in the air. It took a few tries, it's not like he's a pro or anything and the wind itself is questionable, but it got up there. Doonie took a few steps to get in a place of comfort, somewhere where the sand wasn't too wet and where the wind wasn't blowing his hair all over the place too badly. The sound of the crashing waves made Doonie smile, it wasn't very loud since they weren't very big this particular time of day in this season. It still was nice, and the wind wasn't deafening. He could probably hear anything from here. Doonie let more and more string out. Jeez, how long is this thing!? Doonie thought. It still kept going but Doonie stopped releasing. It was getting really high, and quite frankly his chances of getting it down without crashing tragically would be slim if it went any higher. Whatever. It was big enough you could still see it and it's shape, it would be cool enough to say, "Oh look over there!" if you were standing somewhere in the school and you looked out, or just sitting on the beach, chatting with a friend. That was what mattered, and Doonie enjoyed it and his surroundings.

Jenna woke up early that morning. So far, it had been quite uneventful. She dressed quickly and slipped out of her room quietly by 8. Making her way down stairs and out of her dorm, she passed a few other early risers who gave her small smiles and waves. Being the new student wasn't fun. She missed her old friends in England. The people she knew, the people she'd grown up with. During her few short days at Kingswood Prep so far, she hadn't really met anyone who sparked her interest. There were a couple girls in her dorm who had spoken to her, but she figured it was more out of politeness then their want to be her friend. As she walked, she got a fair share of curious stares from other students, probably students who had gone here for their whole high school career and didn't recognize her. Jenna, on the other hand, was still trying to figure out the way American high schools even worked. But she put on a bubbly smile and continued on her way. Afterall, it was her first Saturday here at Kingswood and she was certain she would at least meet someone who was willing to talk to her, even if it was just because of her accent that so many people were curious about.
She glanced across the street at the gorgeous ocean, wanting desperately to go over and enjoy it's beauty. First, though, she was determined to find a local coffee shop and get a quick bite to eat and a cup of coffee. Jenna could already tell that today was going to be a gorgeous September day. The sun was already out and shining, but there were just enough clouds in the sky to keep it from beating down relentlessly on the people below and a cooling sea breeze was present in the air, making it a wonderful summer morning. This brightened Jenna's mood even more and she grinned from ear to ear. She was probably a sight to see for the people passing by, but she didn't care, she was in a good mood and she wasn't afraid to show it. All the people she passed seemed to have frowns on their faces and disheartened attitudes. Didn't they see that this was a gorgeous morning on which they were lucky to be alive? That was Jenna's thought at least as she continued on her way.
She finally made it to the closest Starbucks and as she walked up to the front door, she could already smell the freshly brewed coffee. It smelled so good she sped up and made her way to the counter to order. A few minutes later, she was walking out of the store with an iced cinnamon dolce latte and a sausage, egg, and cheese english muffin in hand. She ate as she walked, returning to Kingwood's campus as slowly as possible. Finishing her breakfast as she approached the school entrance, she dumped her trash into a nearby bin and gulped down the last of her latte before tossing it into the bin as well. She was about to head back to her dorm when she heard the crashing of a large wave on the shore and she glanced over her shoulder at the sight. Unable to resist any longer, she hurried across the street, slipping off her shoes as her feet stepped onto the soft sand. Not wanting to be stuck in a beach entrance, she started walking down the shore a little ways. Looking up at the sky, she noticed a blue and yellow kite flying nearby. She could remotely see a symbol of some sort on it, but not enough to make out what it was. It was much too high for that.
Continuing on down the beach, she spotted a fairly large rock away from the crashing of the waves. There was no one around, so she walked over and took a seat on top of it with a smile. What a perfect place to sit on a perfectly gorgeous day. Staring out at the ocean relaxed her and for some reason, she felt the urge to sing. She started out humming quietly to herself, but ended up belting out the lyrics to Rolling in the Deep by Adele, perfectly on key.

Doonie wasn't sure what was on his mind. He liked deep thinking, but he never really knew what he was thinking about or how he got on that topic in the first place. It was always spur of the moment, something just popped into his head. Later, half the time he thinks "How did I think of that?" and other times he doesn't even remember what he thought about. Sometimes he remembers and thinks it's reasonable, but really, when the thought "Aren't rhinos just ugly unicorns?" sprung itself inside his mind, he really doesn't know what goes on in there. It's just really hard for him to explain since it shifts and changes all the time. But it's cool, Doonie's used to it and just goes with the flow, it'd be hard to change.
At the moment, Doonie's thoughts were on the color of the sky. He knew the whole deal about the absorption and reflection of light, yadayadayada, it was the basic chemistry class where he learned about wavelengths. But he wasn't thinking about what produced the color, it was really on why the atmosphere chose to reflect "blue", and why we started calling it "blue" in the first place. Who created the words? Why do we call them the names we do? He was thinking about language when he looked up at the sky, until he heard a voice singing. It first it sounded a little muffled, but as he turned his ear towards the direction it was coming from he could make out the words. "There's a fire starting in my heart, reaching a fever pitch and it's bringing me out the dark," Rolling in the deep. Doonie thought. His mind shifted from language, to the lyrics of the song. He'd heard this once or twice before, and he thought Adele's voice was really strong, it was amazing. He wasn't the type to sing her songs when he was alone, most of his covers are by male singers. But he looked to his left and to his right, did a circle actually, and the closest people were way far down the beach. He couldn't tell where the source of the singing was, but if they were far, their voice sure traveled quite a ways.
Anyhow, the anonymous and strong voice he was hearing was definitely not Adele, but whoever they were (Doonie assumed a girl) was now at the chorus. He honestly didn't know he was doing, or thinking, but he began to sing backup. "Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep. You're gonna wish you never had met me. Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep," he sang, trying to harmonize. His kite was still flying high, but now he was singing the next verse along with her at first. "Baby, I have no story to be told, but I've heard one of you, and I'm gonna make your head burn, think of me in the depths of your despair, making a home down there, as mine sure won't be shared," |
This was really weird for Doonie. This... probably wasn't a song for a guy to be singing, but he was singing loud and proud, it's not like many people would ever be hearing this. "Wow, what am I doing?" he thought, as he started to roll the string up for his kite. He continued singing, no longer listening for the other voice, as he brought his kite down in control. He paused however after the chorus was done, and his kite was safely in his hands to listen for the voice again. It was really, truly, heavenly.

Jenna sat there in that secluded little area singing her heart out. As she stared out at the roaring ocean, she imagined herself about to walk out on a stage in front of a crowd of thousands and sing Adele for them while her fans cheered her on. "Jen-na! Jen-na! Jen-na!" She could hear them chanting. Then the crowd appeared in front of her, where the ocean had been just moments ago, and the rock she was sitting on turned into a couch, coming up from under the stage little by little until the whole platform was even with the stage. And then the music started. She felt the beat of the drums and absentmindedly patted her leg along with it. It was that familiar tune, Rolling in the Deep, and she held the mic close to her mouth and started singing. "There's a fire starting in my heart, reaching a fever pitch and it's bringing me out the dark."
She imagined the roars of the ocean as the beating of the drums in the background, the slight breeze whistling past her was the guitarists jamming out beside her. By the time she reached the chorus, she was up and running around the shore as if it were a stage. Luckily, there was no one within seeing range of the naked eye, so unless someone was stalking her with binoculars, no one was watching. "We could've had it all, rolling in the deep." She sang with all her heart now, for her "fans". She must have looked out of her mind to someone walking along the beach, but she didn't care and there was no one there anyways. By the time she reached the bridge, she wanted this life more than anything. She wanted to be up there on stage performing her heart out every night of the year. "We could've had it all. We could've had it all." This part of the song slowed down slightly, and her voice dropped low enough that she thought she heard someone else singing the background part for her. "Now you're gonna wish you never had met me. Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep." She was sure of it. There was someone singing along with her and she hadn't even noticed it. She quieted her voice just enough so she could hear the other one. The more she listened to it, she realized it was a male's voice. And it was actually good. "Maybe I'm just imagining things," she told herself with a shrug and picked up her voice again. Because she had been focusing on the voice in the background and not on her crazy imagination, the blue sky and roaring ocean and hard rock had returned and she started to realize how stupid she probably seemed. She was, after all, sitting out here on a rock on the beach in front of the ocean in a town she had just moved to and pretending she was singing in front of a crowd of screaming fans. If someone from her new school walked up and saw her, they were sure to think she was crazy. And then they'd go back to the school and tell all their friends that the new girl with the British accent was insane. And then no one would talk to her and she wouldn't make any friends. That would make the school year pleasant now wouldn't it? "You had my heart and soul in your hand, but you played it, you played it, you played it to the beat." Though her thoughts had shifted, she had continued singing, maybe a little less intensely, but still loud and clear and on key. But now that the song was over, she wasn't sure what to to. Should she sing another song? Listen for the male voice she had heard? She decided to simply sit there and take in the view for now. If the person behind the voice was close enough for her to hear, maybe he would walk this way and she'd catch a glimpse of him. If not, oh well. She'd pack up her things and go back to her dorm. As she stared up into the sky, she noticed that the kite from earlier was gone, which made her wonder if the person singing had been the one flying it. "Probably not," she told herself and shifted her eyes back to the horizon with a content sigh. Doonie had the kite clutched in his hands and he took a deep breath in of the sea air as he listened to the singing voice finish the song. 'They were pretty good...' Doonie thought as he picked his slippers up off the sand and clapped them, attempting to get some of the sand off before he would put them on to cross back over to campus again. He played the voice over again in his head- whoever they were, or she was, his or her voice was really on-key. Definitely not something you come by every day, even at Kingswood. See here, everyone has something to brag about. Money, sports, musical talent, acting talent, brains- you just don't get in on a whim and not have something special to say about yourself. You'd think there would be plenty of astounding singers but since there's just so many other things to be great at, the numbers can be thin in certain areas. Sports was never weak, which Doonie liked a lot, it means you win, but there's a lot more competition if you want that captain or starting spot in the game.
After replaying in his head quite a few lines of lyrics, Doonie found himself humming to himself. It was a warm buzzing that filled him up, and the tune? None other than Rolling in the Deep. It was officially stuck in his head. He rolled his eyes at himself and his own thinking and started walking along the shore of the beach carefully. He watched his own feet and looked at all the washed up sea shells and other rocks. They too, eventually, would turn into sand. He wondered how long it would take for all the erosion would happen until his train of thought derailed when he heard people shouting behind him. He turned around and started walking backwards so he could continue going in the direction he wanted, but still look at what was going on. They were some ways down the beach but it was what seemed to be a happy couple - maybe some best friends - chasing each other around in the water, splashing, laughing, and arguing. He squinted trying to focus in, he wished he had someone to do that with. Someone that would spend the day with him outside. He continued humming and fantasizing about what it would be like to have someone like that.
Today was not Doonie's lucky day. Whilst walking backwards, he tripped over a sand castle, lost his balance, and landed flat on his back. "Oof." Now his whole back side was covered in sand, just what he needed- dirty clothes. It's one thing he hated about the beach, the sand getting everywhere and up in your grill, he could say. Doonie grunted and sat up. To his right was the ocean, in fact a wave was just coming up to chase him now, and to the left- his eyes just widened. He forgot about the wave as his eyes dilated and focused on what Doonie would call a goddess. She was obviously very attractive, and at this point in time - if this was a movie - the camera would be focusing in on the pretty girl, the outer edges of the background would be blurred and wind would be blowing her hair back as she laughed, smiled, or simply was just looking hot. The waves, luckily for Doonie, still hadn't made it out as far as him and only got a little bit of his side wet, just a little bit by his knee. That brought him back down to reality, and he came to the realization that she probably had just seen him look like a fool and fall down. 'Oh crap!' he thought. His cheeks suddenly started to redden, even though he couldn't tell if she was looking right at him or not. Doonie was kind of in a situation. How should he handle it? What about the girl? He needed to look cool.
Doonie casually stood up, did a big stretch (maybe even flexed his arms a little, even though most of his muscle was concealed by his sleeves) and attempted to scratch some sand off his neck and back. He "gave up" and decided to walk closer to that girl, she was a stranger, yeah, but he didn't really care about stranger danger. He listened to it, but trusted his own judgement, and she didn't seem the type to be a predator. She looked like a high schooler- probably someone new at Kingswood or just in the area. He'd never seen her around before. Vacationeer? Unlikely. He was probably about five or six feet away from her when he simply grinned, hoping to get a 'hi' or something. Hopefully not a comment about how he biffed it down there, but if it meant a conversation, he'd be happy. Doonie slowed his strides down just a tad, to give the widest window available. Am I really basing this just on looks? he thought. Doonie looked at his watch and realized it'd be time to run in a few minutes, and after a little small talk- it'd probably have to be a goodbye. Oh shootskies. It didn't even cross his mind that it could've been her who was singing. Not even for a second.

When it seemed like she'd waited long enough for the mystery male back up singer to appear, she decided to head back to the school campus. It hadn't been very long, but everyone knows when you're waiting for something (or someone), time seems to go by as slow as a snail carrying an elephant on its back all the way from New York to California. She had already picked up her purse and shoes and was about to start walking back when suddenly she saw a boy trip over a sand castle and fall flat on his back with a thud. Her eyes widened with curiousity as she watched him, her purse slipping off her shoulder and back onto the rock from which she had yet to leave. Her mind began to race. Could this be the mystery singer she had been waiting for the past ten minutes? Was he the person flying the kite she'd seen earlier? He had been walking backwards when he fell, maybe he was waiting for someone to join him. That seemed the most probable to Jenna and she waited for someone to rush up to him and ask him if he was okay. When no one came, she was surprised. He seemed about her age, most likely a student at Kingswood Prep out for an early stroll on the beach, possibly with a friend or girlfriend. Why else would he be walking backwards?
It was then that Jenna realized he was staring at her. Their eyes met, but she quickly looked away, down the beach to be exact. She saw a happy couple chasing each other not far away from them. Something stirred inside her and she felt a tinge of jealousy, which quickly faded when she glanced back a the boy who had fallen. He was now standing up, stretching his arms as if he had just woken up. Though he was wearing a shirt with sleeves, Jenna thought she caught a slight trace of a flex in his biceps, but she was probably just imagining things. Suddenly, he started walking toward her. What was he doing? He even smiled at her as he approached! She glanced over her shoulder to make sure there wasn't someone else there that he might be smiling at, but there was no one there. Jenna wasn't usually one to be shy around strangers (or anyone for that matter), and this was no exception, but she wasn't sure exactly what to say. She wanted to know if he was the guy who had been singing with her, but she figured that would be a stupid way to start a conversation, especially if it hadn't been him. "Oh hi, just wondering, were you the one who was singing back up to that Adele song a few minutes ago?" - "Uh, no." - "Oh, nevermind." Can you say AWKWARD!?
As he drew closer, Jenna continued to watch him. Once again, they made eye contact, but this time she didn't look away. "Hi there," Jenna finally said when he was only a few feet away. Her British accent was obvious, even from just those couple words. She couldn't really hide it. Sure, she'd tried to use an American accent before, but it just wasn't natural and she always went back to using her native British voice after a while. She had only been questioned about it a few times since she'd been at Kingswood, luckily, and that was mostly by her teachers who wanted to know why she had moved here. A sudden wind swept past them, making Jenna's hair blow backwards just like in the movies. (; She shivered slightly and smiled at the boy approaching her.

when i met you girl my heart went knock knock , now them butterflies in my stomach won't stop stop Doonie's grin widened when he heard the girl say "Hi there." Well, my hopes of the moment have been fulfilled. he thought. And, Doonie noticed an accent in her voice, was it British? Sounded English. He wasn't sure, but instead of freezing up being stuck in the moment of solving the origin of her accent, he said, "Hi," It was quite simple. All you can think of is, hi!? He punched himself internally for that one. But hey, he'll talk to girls, but he's not really sure what comes out of his mouth half the time. He gets giddy. Doonie continued grinning. Now, it didn't look stupid, he just looked smiley. He's always been a smiley kind of guy. In fact, Smiley was almost his nickname, but it was Cassian who suggested it. Doonie doesn't like Cassian. He almost used it- since he really wasn't a fan of Leslie, but his older sister Rachel came up with Doonie. So he went with that.
Just then, right when Doonie said his poor recognition, a light gust of wind picked up and blew Jenna's hair gorgeously, and Doonie's hair, well, not so gorgeous. Since Doonie was facing her, his hair just stood up funky, while Jenna's flowed back nice and evenly, like the movies. Doonie couldn't help thinking he was imagining this, since he almost was before he walked over to her, but he could feel the wind, so it was one-hundred percent real. He attempted to flatten down his hair, but the wind did not stop for him, so it just went back to standing up. Great. All he could do was smirk and chuckle a bit, since she was looking at him and they were both being quiet. "I'm Doonie, do you go to Kingswood?" he asked her, breaking the silence. Doonie listened to her, then said "Oh, uh-huh. That's cool. I'm a junior there." The wind finally died down and he flattened out his hair again. "Yeah!"
Doonie quickly glanced at his watch again- he'd have to go soon; like, real soon. Less than two minutes? One minute? Crap. At least I met her. He continued listening to what she was saying but had to cut her off. Doonie felt bad about it, but if he was late to this little shindig, it wouldn't be pleasant. "-Hey, sorry for interrupting you, but I actually have to run," he said pleadingly. "I'm really sorry, it was great meeting you, I-" Doonie took another look at his watch. "I gotta go, see you around?" He thought he was looking sincerely sorry, and when she let out a response he gave a farewell. Doonie began jogging back to campus barefooted with kite and flip flops in hand to get out of his sandy clothes. He'd hopefully have enough time to quick change. As Doonie headed away, he thought over and over again: Wow... she was really pretty.

Taking notice of the boy's continuous grin, Jenna couldn't help but smile back. She didn't know the guy at all, but for some reason she got the feeling he was a nice guy. Unsure of what to say, she just held her smile firmly in place and remained quiet. When the wind kicked up, it blew his hair in all sorts of ways since his back was to the sudden gust. Jenna couldn't hold back a giggle at that. She was generally a happy person and loved to laugh, no matter what it was at. She wasn't trying to be mean and make fun of him or anything, she just found the current placement of his hair funny and therefore let out a giggle. The wind let down just a bit and the boy finally broke the silence between the two. He introduced himself and asked her if she attended Kingswood. "Yes, I just transferred there," she replied with a shrug. He went on the say that he was a junior there. "I'm a junior as well,"
she told him with a polite smile as the wind died down even more. Doonie flattened his hair down once again and Jenna was glad it had returned to its normal position so she wouldn't be tempted to bust out laughing at the way it looked. It was all she could do to keep her laughter to a giggle. "I just moved to the area from England." She went on to explain that her family had moved to California because of her dad's business and that she was excited about attending Kingswood and how she was impressed with the school so far. She really wasn't taking the conversation anywhere, she was just rambling on because Doonie was being so quiet. Being the observant person she was, Jenna noticed Doonie glance at his watch before looking back at her. It wasn't hard to tell, after that, that he was in a hurry. She could easily tell that he needed to go, long before he cut her off. For a brief moment, she wondered where he was off to, but that thought quickly passed when he asked if he'd see her around with a sincerely apologetic expression on his face. "Uh, yeah, sure. See you later," she replied, a little taken aback, though she smiled at him anyway. Jenna watched him jog away until she couldn't see him anymore. When he was completely out of sight, Jenna stood and started walking off in the direction Doonie had gone moments earlier with thoughts of him still in her head.
